Water for Elephants Review By Rachel Raffino

If you are looking for a book that you can read for hours on end without getting bored, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is the book for you. From an elephant that only understands polish, to a love affair, this book covers it all.

The books begins with readers learning about a senior student at Cornell named Jacob. Jacob is about to take his final exams and become a vet when his life turns upside down. After the tragic event of his parents death, he loses his grip on life and runs away. He ends up boarding a train that belongs to the Benzini Brothers Circus. After quickly landing a job in "the most spectacular show on earth" as their vet, Jacob promptly falls in love. He not only falls in love with the elephant Rosie, but Marlena, his bosses wife. Through a wild adventure and vivid writing, the tale of Jacob, Marlena, and Rosie is told, with breathtaking circus acts you wish were real.

After reading this book, I concluded this was one of the best books I've ever read. Water for Elephants made me feel joyful, sad, suspenseful and many other emotions with every page I turned. In addition, this book has one narrator, but it switches between him when he is 20, and him when he is 80. Reading the book from the characters different ages was a great touch to the book, and enhanced my reading experience greatly. I would recommend this book to anyone, animal lover or not. The simple yet effective writing Sara Gruen used allowed this book to be an easy, yet entertaining read.

I would finally like to say, that this book is not merely a story, it is an inspiration. The following quote is one I believe to be the most important line in the whole book"life is the most spectacular show on earth." In this line, readers are reminded to stay adventurous, for life is spectacular.

  1. I also loved this book! The movie version was well done too. I agree that reading a story told by a character at different times in his life is very interesting! ~ Mrs. Kopp
